Meet Guppy!
Some dogs come into rescue and make you wonder how they ever survived without someone looking out for them. Guppy is one of those dogs.
Guppy is estimated to be around 5–6 years old and is the perfect medium-sized, stocky, compact little dude. He spent his entire life living outdoors until he came into our foster program after we rescued him from the Gleason dog pound.
And we use the word pound intentionally. This is not a traditional animal shelter—it is essentially five outdoor kennels where dogs are temporarily held until they are reclaimed or euthanized. That was where Guppy ended up after the people who had “owned” him lost their home and property in a fire and suddenly had nowhere for him to go.
Somehow, through all of that, Guppy remained the most gentle, loving soul you could ever meet.
Guppy is also hard of hearing, although we don't know exactly why. It is possible he was born with some degree of hearing loss, or it could potentially be related to the blast from the fire—we simply don't know his history well enough to say. What we do know is that he can definitely hear some things. He responds to certain pitches and louder sounds, including high-pitched noises and loud barking. His hearing is simply not what it should be, so his family will need to be mindful of that and make sure he can see them or otherwise get his attention rather than relying on verbal cues alone.
He is also heartworm positive, but he is nearing the end of his treatment and will soon have that chapter of his life behind him, too.
And then there is Guppy's personality—and this is where he completely steals your heart.
He is the most gentle soul you will ever meet. We have encountered other dogs with similar breed mixes, and Guppy is the absolute opposite of what we have sometimes experienced. He is incredibly laid-back, tolerant, sweet, and easygoing. He is good with dogs, cats, children of all ages, and pretty much anything you put near him.
Guppy isn't looking for a crazy, action-packed lifestyle. Most of the time, he is perfectly content to hang out outside, lounge around, relax, and simply be near his people. Every once in a while he'll break out into a case of the zoomies, but for the most part, he is a professional lounger.
There is something incredibly special about watching a dog like Guppy discover that life can be safe. He went from living outdoors to losing the only home he knew, ending up in an outdoor pound with his future uncertain, and then coming into foster care where he has finally been able to experience comfort, kindness, and stability.
And through it all, he has remained sweet.
He doesn't hold a grudge. He doesn't demand much. He doesn't need a fancy life. He just wants to be loved and included—and he has so much love to give in return.
Guppy is the kind of dog who makes you grateful you said yes to rescue.
He has survived losing his home, life outdoors, an uncertain future, hearing loss, and heartworm disease. Now, he deserves the part of his story where everything finally gets better.
Guppy is ready for a family who will see past everything he has been through and love him for the incredibly sweet, gentle dog he is.
If you're looking for a wonderful medium-sized companion who is good with practically everyone, enjoys the simple things in life, and would be perfectly happy lounging by your side, Guppy may be your guy.
His past may explain how he got here, but it doesn't define him. His future is what matters now.

We feel the same way! The DOG ADOPTION INTEREST FORM is important and REQUIRED for this reason. All of our Adoptables are:Spayed/neutered; Up to date on vaccines; Heartworm tested if six months or older (& kept on heartworm preventative and treated for heartworms if positive when entering our program): Microchipped prior to adoptionBREEDS: We are not breed experts. The breed(s) listed for each adoptable are best guesses or suggestions.PLEASE NOTE: We are a non-profit organization without municipal or government funding. Veterinary/Medical expenses are constant for an animal rescue. Our adoption fees not only help to provide vetting and care for the animal being adopted, but they also help to cover heartworm treatments and other treatable ailments that many animals, that would otherwise be euthanized, need in order to be made available for adoption. Please understand that adopting an animal is a LIFETIME COMMITMENT to that animal and there will be veterinary expenses throughout their life that can often cost several hundreds, if not thousands of dollars (without pet insurance), especially without annual checkups and preventative care. As a potential family for this pet you are responsible for their safety and that includes keeping them on your property.***If you are not in the middle Tennessee area, transport can potentially be arranged to approved homes, depending on distance and local adaptability. We normally do not allow adoptions outside of 1.5 hours driving distance.
